The Department of Philosophy was initially established as a post graduate department in Govt. Mohindra College, Patiala. In 1969 it came to the present Punjabi University Campus. In 1970, with more faculty. M. Phil classes were introduced. Since then, the department has widened its areas of specialization by introducing courses and research in Applied Ethics, Philosophy of Culture and Sikhism Applied Philosophy. The department has had the opportunity to hold the Indian Philosophical Congress once and many national seminars and Lectures. Extension Lectures on current Philosophical and social issues are arranged from time to time to increase awareness and to enhance the knowledge of students.
